Location: City of Frederick, Maryland – completed by the Fox Frederick team.
Project Description:
- Fox developed improvement plans for the total reconstruction of approximately 3,100 L.F. of Opossumtown Pike in the corporate limits of Frederick, MD.
- The proposed improvement to Opossumtown Pike consisted of removing the existing 2-lane roadbed, and widening the roadway to meet the current design standard for a City collector street in order to improve the operating characteristics of the roadway.
- The design included storm drainage facilities, water line upgrades, curb & gutter, sidewalk, landscaping and lighting improvements.
- The project limits extended from Poole Jones Road on the South end of the project to McClellan Dr. at the north end which is a distance of approximately 3,100 linear feet. A portion of this project was performed under contract with the City of Frederick while all other design services were performed under contract with the developer of the North Crossing and Clover Ridge subdivisions.
Site Considerations:
- The desire of the City to reconstruct Opossumtown Pike created some unique design challenges. Opossumtown Pike, while an unimproved roadway, was acting as a collector for several subdivisions and individual properties. Total reconstruction required a complex traffic control plan implementing a detour route that required extensive coordination with multiple City departments and Neighborhood Advisory Committees (NAC). The project construction schedule was compressed in order to build the roadway while schools were on summer break to minimize traffic impacts. Construction was completed in 3 months with the roadway opening on schedule prior to the start of fall classes.
