Location: Frederick, Maryland – completed by Fox Frederick
Project Description:
Fox prepared an alignment study and subsequently developed improvement plans for the construction of approximately 8,000 L.F. of large diameter interceptor sewer by Frederick County, Maryland. The interceptor is located in the north side of Frederick between the Cloverhill and Willow Brook developments. The sewer main is for the purpose of eliminating two existing pump stations located near Poole Jones Road and provide new service to the Tuscarora Creek Drainage area.
Site Considerations:
The general route follows the banks of Tuscarora Creek upstream from Opposumtown Pike to it’s confluence with an unnamed tributary No. 89. From there, the selected route generally follows the tributary to the pump station located near Poole Jones Road. Due to the proximity of floodplain and wetlands, Fox was tasked initially with preparing environmental studies in order to select the horizontal alignment in an environmentally sensitive manner.
Survey/Engineering Highlights:
All control surveys were prepared using G.P.S. methods. Topography was prepared by photogrammetry methods and supplemented with field verification of existing utilities and drainage facilities where such facilities were evident. Engineering services included preparation of a hydraulic study to determine line sizes. A previous study performed for the County was provided.
Data for alternate land uses was input into the previously prepared study to determine final line sizes. Complete contract documents and construction plans were prepared and approved by all permitting agencies.
The fruition of this project will reduce maintenance costs to Frederick County by elimination of two pump stations. Also, the system provides sewer service for a large, currently undeveloped area in the Tuscarora Creek Watershed.
